The Danger of Impression Material……………………………………

Did you know that by sending a contaminated impression to a dental lab without notifying them that it has not been disinfected violates multiple regulations and health codes?

Dental impression materials need to be rinsed in water and disinfected immediately after making to control transfer of infectious materials from saliva and blood to casts and to dental healthcare workers. The ADA has recommended that impressions made be decontaminated.

There are many commonly used disinfectants in dentistry. Studies have shown that bacterial and viral contaminants can be effectively controlled by disinfection. The disinfection process may sometimes affect material properties of impression materials, so the Council on Dental Materials and Devices has developed methods for testing surface detail and dimensional stability of materials. These test methods with greater samples can be used to study the effects of disinfectants on elastomeric impression materials.

So, what should you do and what should you use. Most standard surface disinfectants will work will do the job; however, an open communication with your lab is called for. In my personal opinion, I would use Optim 33TB by Scican. Why? Because it is documented to kill bugs not people. I won’t yellow your counters and it can be used to clean and disinfect chairs without damaging them.

• OPTIM 33 TB also has a 1 minute claim against:

Human Corona virus (SARS), HIV-1, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Avian Influenza (Bird Flu), Salmonella,

E.Coli, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus aureus MRSA and other viruses & bacteria.

• In addition, OPTIM 33 TB achieves 99.9% broad-spectrum kill (3 log reduction) of vegetative bacteria in 30 seconds!

How Far Have We Fallen Behind the Curve?…………………………………

I guess it’s time to get back to talking about technology, unfortunately, everything cost 10’s of thousands of dollars. You can’t look at these technologies and think of them as expenses, they are investments.

What do I mean by investment? The fact that most of these feats of engineering and development, if planned and used correctly, will generate “multi-levels” of new revenue is not the only up-side. Up-date the technology and you will dramatically increase the value of your most important asset, your practice. Quality associates and possible buyers want these tools.

When running your practice (business) you need tools not toys. You don’t integrate digital radiography because you want it; you integrate because you need it! You don’t utilize a Velscope because Dr. Oz told you to; you utilize it because it is a diagnostic tool that helps you do something better and more accurate. You can see things you were never able to see before. You can raise your standard of care and that makes you a more valuable healthcare professional. Ask yourself this question, why should a patient walk into my office and not the office down the street? Answer: with or without insurance, my office provides a better healthcare environment.

The technological curve is getting steeper every day. Your patients see it and they expect their healthcare providers to utilize the new abilities to raise the standard of care. You can’t wait any longer to get on the bus.

The following video was developed by Sony and presented at an international corporate meeting of Sony executives & managers in 2008. You can’t allow yourself to fall too far behind the curve because you will never be able to catch up.

This video was produced in 2008 think about it! Do you really know how far you are falling behind? You need a plan and you need to start putting it together today. It all starts with a conversation about where you want to be in 3, 5, and 10 years. Every day you wait is costing you a lot more than you think.
