The reason we do what we do, is so that we can to do what we want to do, when we want to do it!

It’s a tongue twister, but working as a team and making informed decisions, will get us there.

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”

Don’t Let Unused Insurance Benefits go to Waste! By Dayna Johnson

September is the perfect time to send out a reminder to your patients who have unused dental insurance benefits. Sending it out now will hopefully get patients to call in sooner instead of waiting until the middle of December when it gets down to crunch time on the calendar. There are two different methods I am going to talk about today: using your Dentrix software to create a mass merge letter and, for those of you using DemandForce, how to merge a list and send out an e-mail campaign.

If you want to send out a letter to patients, Dentrix has a default letter in the “Letters” drop-down menu in the “Miscellaneous” tab on the Office Manager (see the picture below). After you have selected the letter, click on “Edit” so you can select the parameters you want. In the picture below, Figure 1 shows you the letter name that is located in your Dentrix Doc folder. If you want to edit the template of the letter, click on “open template” and you can change the text of the letter. Then, in Figure 2, you can filter the list by procedures codes listed in the patient’s treatment plan and the date when the procedures were added to the patient’s treatment plan. After you have completed this, click OK and then “create merge” and it will search your patient database and merge any patients who meet the criteria into the letter. Voila!

 Dr. Charles Blair

Coding with Confidence: The “Go-To” Dental Insurance Guide, is a road map through the coding jungle, which offers an expert’s advice and guidance on how to legitimately reimburse you for what you do. It’s exactly what the doctor ordered.

At just $109.95 (Henry Schein #368-0263) this manual can pay for itself the very first time you use it. Think about it, if Coding with Confidence helps you correctly code just an additional $50 per day, it may easily translate into an additional $10,000 per year in legitimate revenue. That’s a 10,000% return on your investment!

Coding with Confidence was written specifically to predict, and therefore prevent, typical errors, misuse, and common mistakes in coding. A way to predict errors before you make them! The manual provides expert assistance to practice staff to keep up with the frequent changes, revisions, and deletions in the CDT codes which are now mandated every other year.  This manual is a wonderful gift for all referring doctors! This reference manual will benefit every referring office. Bottom line: it is outstanding, useful information.

The Root of It Commentary………………………………………….

Dental Sleep Medicine, The Oral Appliance

Oral appliances are a front-line treatment for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. This small plastic device fits in the mouth during sleep like a sports mouth guard or orthodontic retainer. Oral appliances help prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat, keeping the airway open during sleep and promoting adequate air intake. Oral appliances may be used alone or in combination with other treatments for sleep-related breathing disorders, such as weight management, surgery or CPAP.
Download the Ins and Outs of Oral Appliance Therapy

Standards of Care

  • Patients with primary snoring or mild OSA who do not respond to, or are not appropriate candidates for treatment with behavioral measures such as weight loss or sleep-position change.
  • Patients with moderate to severe OSA should have an initial trial of nasal CPAP, due to greater effectiveness with the use of oral appliances.
  • Patients with moderate to severe OSA who are intolerant of or refuse treatment with nasal CPAP. Oral appliances are also indicated for patients who refuse treatment, or are not candidates for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, cranofacial operations, or tracheostomy.

I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I will ask every member of my government to become involved.
