The reason we do what we do, is so that we can to do what we want to do, when we want to do it!

It’s a tongue twister, but working as a team and making informed decisions, will get us there.

Albert Einstein gave one explanation of why dentists are great!

Einstein knew a thing or two about knowing and had this to say about the nature of understanding:

“If you can’t explain it simply, You don’t understand it well enough.”

Dentists, dental assistants, hygienists and the whole dental office team make the complicated topic of understanding of oral health easy for patients!

But, what about the Systemic Health connection?

Just A Few Notes: – These next few weeks and maybe months, we need to extend ourselves to all of our neighbors and friends that have and continue to suffer in the NJ/NY Metro region. My family lost power and had some damage inflicted on our home. However, we still have our home and it is dry and repairable. So many people are not as lucky. I want to thank all of those people, many of them my dentist clients, that offered assistance. These are the people that make our communities great. These are the people that wave others through at intersections where the traffic lights aren’t working. These are the people that wait patiently on gas lines understanding that it could be worst. These are the people that make America the strongest and most supportive nation on Earth. And a special thanks to all of our public servants who have put their own personal issues aside to stabilize the infrastructure and help those that are now homeless and destitute. Regardless of your political affiliations, be proud of whom we are and thank you for all you do to be part of our way of life.

The Office Manager Blog:…………………………………

Everybody Loves a Short Cut!

One thing I love about Dentrix is that there are several ways to accomplish the same thing. What do I mean? Every Dentrix module has a toolbar at the top with icons (I know you might not be able to tell exactly what some of the icons are, but you eventually memorize them). For every icon, there is also a dropdown menu where you can find what you are looking for (just in case you prefer dropdown menus). If you’re a person who prefers “right clicking,” you can get the same dropdown menu in many places within Dentrix. Maybe you knew all of this … but did you know that there is a list of keyboard stroke shortcuts in Dentrix? Many people don’t know about this valuable time-saving “secret.”

In wake of hurricane, ADA president issues email alert to members

November 02, 2012

Editor’s note: The following is the text of an email message that Dr. Robert A. Faiella, ADA president, sent to members today.

As dentists, our common bond undoubtedly includes deep concern for any communities affected by disasters, including their dentists. Across the country, our hearts certainly go out to all those suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Many dentists were among those in harms’ way from the storm. I’d like to update you on how ADA and our network of state and local dental societies are responding.

Before the storm struck the coast, ADA’s disaster team contacted dental associations serving states along the Atlantic coast, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, plus some inland, to link them to resources for dentists during the recovery phase. Key information was posted on ADA.org including information about ADA Foundation grant programs.

Keeping your hygiene scalers and curettes sharp is made simple and efficient by using the Nordent InstRenew Sharpening Assistant. Maximum instrument protection during sterilization can be achieved by using the Nordent Sterilization Cassette System.

Care must be taken to inspect, clean and sterilize instruments prior to each use. Instruments that show any signs of corrosion, dull or weakened blades, misalignment or defects should be taken out of service immediately.

Stainless Steel Instruments

Nordent uses many different types of stainless steels in the production of instruments dependent upon the design and application of the instrument. All stainless steels have a high nickel and chromium content to maximize corrosion resistance but will corrode and discolor when subjected to high concentrations of certain chemicals.

Never expose stainless steel instruments to products that are not specifically formulated for use with dental instruments or for the purpose of cleaning and sterilizing dental instruments. Do not expose stainless steel dental instruments to the following chemicals. These chemicals will cause an adverse reaction and may destroy your instruments: Chlorine or Chlorinated products, Household Bleach, Tarter and Stain Remover, Aluminum Chloride, Aqua Regia, Barium Chloride, Bichloride of Mercury, Calcium Chloride, Carbolic Acid, Chlorinated Lime, Citric Acid, Dakin’s Solution, Ferric Chloride, Ferrous Chloride, Hydrochloric Acid, Iodine, Lysol®, Mercury Chloride, Mercury Salts, Phenol, Potassium Permanganate, Potassium Thiocyanate, Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach), Stannous Chloride, Sulfuric Acid and Tartaric Acid (Tarter & Stain Remover)

The Root of It Commentary………………………………..

Disaster Recovery, Now Do You Understand?

Quite often I talk to my clients about “disaster recovery” and we focus on data back-up and the security of patient records. Most offices I speak with engage in an off-site back-up service although some choose to use portable hard drives or tape back-up methods and take the data with them when they leave the office. The off-site 3rd party back-up is defiantly the best; however, you need to fully understand the capabilities of the data back-up provider.

Any IT Group can provide back-up support and many of them do. It is very profitable and secures their relationship with the client. But, (and there is always a but!) have you done your due diligence in validating the capability and extent of the support? Probably not because most people don’t, they assume and remember when you assume you make an ASS out of U and ME

Disaster Recovery is a very complex issue. It covers everything from data retrieval and protection to product liability, patient and employee risk management, continuance of business, and financial security & protection. Most dentists (business owners) don’t understand the complexities and require professional guidance that specializes in specific areas of concern. Your legal and financial consultants are not one stop shops. Now you may not want to spend the money, but as I have always said, you have no expenses in business just investments. And as Ben Franklin said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Today, in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, we will focus on data back-up and recovery. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. Is my data backed up routinely at the same time every day?
  2. Does my back-up provider have HIPP compliant, encrypted severs?
  3. Does my back-up provider have insurance in excess of $1M per incident that will cover my office’s loss and legal responsibility and do I have a copy of proof of insurance in my possession?

These 3 questions are very important but as you can see, points #2 & #3 cross over into risk management and liability. By not securely addressing these issues, a prosecuting or plaintiff’s attorney will easily fracture any defense you can present.

I have been in business for a lot of years. I have seen a lot of mistakes and I have learned from personal missteps as well. Every facet of your business needs to address liabilities. What protections you engage in are your decisions and you are the one that will be accountable. Weigh those decisions carefully and consult with you trusted advisors. Ben Franklin also said “trust 2 people, God and yourself and watch God”.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns. Confidentiality and your success is my concern (201-321-7494 or cliff.marsh@henryschein.com). As a side note, all Henry Schein internal e-mail communications are encrypted for security. Also, Henry Schein will not promote or sell any product from any vendor that does not supply  “Proof of Insurance” documentation on an annual basis that does not exceed $2M in coverage per incident.

“I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I will ask every member of my government to become involved. The old ideas are new again because they are not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in.”

George H.W. Bush

“We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”

Ronald Reagan
