The Root of It Commentary……………………………………………….

Infection Control, In the News Again!

image001Yes, I think he should be punished, maybe even go to jail, but that needs to be decided by the courts and our law abiding society. Unfortunately it is impossible to achieve sterility in an dental office. We don’t have sealed rooms or sterile staff to glove and gown us. However, although we practice routinely in an infectious surgical environment, the instances of cross contamination are very few. In fact, we are more likely to be contaminated by the patient than the patient being contaminated by our staff.

To the public, infection control procedures in a dental office are critical to the “patient experience” but the truth is that infection control is a “defensive” clinical issue and greatly affects you O.S.H.A compliance.

Infection control, O.S.H.A & HIPPA concerns are all part of your risk management protocol. However, if you are smart, you can make all of these defensive expenses become a positive part of your practice growth.

See the attached protocols or call Cliff @ 201-321-7494 or e-mail cliff.marsh@henryschein.com

The Office Manager Blog:…………………………………………………..

Become super-efficient with templates!

image001In my most recent article, “The three core components when transitioning to electronic health records,” I talked a lot about efficiency and consistency. For all the Dentrix users, I want to give you some help when it comes to building templates, which can be a huge time-saver in your office. Here are some of my favorite template tips.

·         Procedure Note Templates – This is my favorite place for the clinical team to document the procedure’s clinical justification (diagnosis, clinical narrative, and remarks for insurance claim). I like it to be documented here because the diagnosis will follow the procedure from treatment planning all the way into history. Also, this note box will download directly into the insurance claim for “Remarks for Unusual Services,” which is required for many procedures. There are two ways to add some reason templates into this area. One is to open the Office Manager > Maintenance > Practice Setup > Custom Notes > Procedure Notes then click add to add a new narrative, or from the patient chart, double-click on a treatment planned procedure and click on the Procedure Note button. Either way, you will open a new box that looks like this:

Who calls the shots?

image005   Illinois dentists advocate to administering flu and other vaccines

April 01, 2013 By Karen Fox, ADA News staff
 Dr. Howell

Springfield, Ill.—As a way to benefit public health in Illinois, dentists have proposed legislation that would enable them to vaccinate patients, but the state’s physicians are fighting to prohibit it from happening.

The Illinois State Medical Society has come out against Illinois State Dental Society-proposed legislation that would allow dentists to administer vaccinations as part of their services to the public. Senate Bill 1217 proposed that dentists who complete training on how to address contraindications and adverse reactions would become additional qualified providers available to administer influenza and other vaccines

Product Review – CarieScan……………………………………………..

Dental caries remains a global scale disease – the detection, activity assessment and diagnosis of caries lesions continue as daily challenges for dental practitioners. It is now widely recognised that dental caries is often missed by even the most careful dental professional using conventional methods of detection.

World Beating Accuracy

The CarieScan PRO is the most accurate method for the early detection of caries. This unique device provides accurate and repeatable data to monitor caries over time, enabling timely preventive treatment and supports evidence based care plans. 94.8% accurate in detecting carious and sound teeth.

Fewer than 7% false positives – nearly seven times less than our nearest competitor. Increase your and your patient’s confidence that the correct diagnosis has been made

Detect more caries and detect it earlier…

Not only will you detect more caries, you will also detect it earlier, therefore increasing proactive preventive care and more timely restorative work.

The CarieScan PRO can measure the carious state of teeth early enough to initiate remedial (preventive) treatment. It enables earlier and more accurate detection of “early” caries lesions which are not clearly visible to the human eye. It also enables detection of the more extensive “hidden” lesions extending into dentine which can be missed by even the most careful examiner. The PRO simultaneously optimizes both preventive and operative care, thereby reducing inappropriate treatment

Simple to use…

  • Air dry the tooth
  • Place the sensor on the tooth a measurement will be displayed in less than 2 seconds
  • To take another reading simply place the sensor on another tooth/site – No calibration required

…and understand

  • The PRO has a simple 0-100 scale
  • A reading of 0-50 means there is a low probability of caries
  • 51-90 is a medium probability of caries
  • 91-100 is a high probability of caries
  • Quantifiable and repeatable output allows for ongoing patient monitoring and an increase in repeat preventive treatments
