image001Is Sterilization Killing Your Handpieces?!

Is the sterilization process killing your handpieces? Well, it shouldn’t be. The chances are that your staff was never instructed on how to handle this very expensive and critical part of your practice. But, feel better in knowing that you are not alone.

Just about every dental office I walk into is doing it wrong. When I ask to about the procedure I usually get the same answer, “we wipe it down with a Cavi-Wipe and then sterilize it”. WRONG ANSWER! Although Cavi-Wipes and all the other surface disinfectants are essential for cleaning and disinfecting counter tops and hard non-porous surfaces, they will greatly decrease the life of your handpiece.

The high ph content and alcohol base will eventually degrade the rubber “O” rings inside the handpiece as well as the metal parts that make up the turbine cartridge. The turbine is designed to spin in excess of 200k rpm and any degree of corrosion will cause a domino effect in the breakdown of the moving parts. In fact, the vapor from counter disinfectant sprays will also build-up and effect to longevity of the turbines.

Every manufacturer has a printed protocol on how to care for their product. All of them will tell you to wash them under the tap with plain water. Dental handpieces are made to get wet. Then you need to lubricate them and purge the excess lubricant. Now you are ready to sterilize them in a quality sterilization pouch with the paper side up.

Follow some simple procedures every time and your most heavily used piece of clinical equipment will last longer and your cost of operation will be reduced.

The Straine Effect!…………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Kerry Straine Concepts in Practice Management:

The Perfect Launch! How to Prepare Your Practice for New Technology!

What is the secret ingredient that will ensure the success of introducing exciting new dental technology into your practice next time? Did you ever think you should plan solid goals, budgets, and timelines? Nothing is more devastating than rushing head first into a new innovation, embracing the vision, firing up your staff, and then stumbling upon “hidden” traps that undermine you and everyone in the practice. Your mission, your patients, and your team need to connect.

Why is it, many committed and passionate dental practice owners wonder, that a revolutionary piece of equipment failed to yield the clinical and economic results anticipated? It was innovative, it clearly supported your standard of care, and your patients were asking for it—what was the ingredient that kept you and your team from experiencing success? The answer was in the LAUNCH—a series of steps that must be taken in order to ensure magic instead of misunderstandings.

Today’s dental market is saturated with “new innovations” almost on a daily basis, which clearly support the contemporary standard of care and promise to generate a return on investment that make them “can’t miss” decisions. The Federal Government has even joined the party by providing tax incentives that allow accelerated depreciation, reducing unplanned Federal income tax liabilities.

Create incredible treatment plan presentations!

I am on my flight back home from the Dentrix Train–the–Trainer annual meeting. The meeting was held this year in San Antonio during Fiesta Week, so not only did we have three days of learning opportunities, but we also had a ton of fun doing it. My next couple of blogs will focus on some of the cool, new things that I learned during my time in San Antonio.

One morning, I was registered for a Treatment Plan and Case Presentation class. My first thought was, “I have taught this class. What could I possibility learn?” However, my philosophy is that there is always learning to be done and I was right. I typically do not train on the Treatment Plan Presenter, but I am going to rethink that after what I witnessed in San Antonio.

Did you know that you can add your own X-rays, photos, other images, text, or video into the Dentrix Presenter to create a dramatic, professional case presentation? It is so simple and, once the setup is done, putting a presentation together is a snap. You can pull in an image, X-ray, or video, and then assign it to certain procedure codes so it will automatically load into the presentation for you. Also, these images or text can be printed onto a treatment plan estimate if you so choose.

image004  Building an Effective “Hygiene Department”!

The American Association of Dental Office Managers

By Rachel Wall, RDH, BS

Imagine this…You walk into the hygiene op to do your exam. Immediately you notice that on the monitor in front of the patient is NOT the latest episode of The View but rather a huge photo of that patient’s tooth. And on that photo it’s clear to see the old restoration is failing and the tooth is at risk for breaking. Next, the hygienist shares with you a medical history update, perio status and any concerns or questions that Mrs. Smith has today. She also mentions that Mrs. Smith is concerned about how dark this tooth is and she’s ready to move forward with treatment. April, your hygienist, has shared with Mrs. Smith that you often recommend full coverage to strengthen a tooth in this situation but you’ll know for sure when you examine her.

Would you be willing to invest time in training and technology to have this happen EVERY day, several times a day?

In my upcoming webinar for One Mind Health, I’ll reveal The 10 Essential Steps to Increase Hygiene Service, Systems and Profits, but for now, let’s dive into one of the most powerful skills your hygienist can possess and how with a small investment of your time, they can feel empowered to help build your practice.

From over 20 years of experience as a practicing hygienist in high performance practices and my years as a hygiene coach, I’ve realized there are a few key steps to building a hygiene department that builds the entire practice.

Empower Your Hygienist!

image005     Illinois issues regulations on how dentists can participate in Groupon!

April 25, 2013 By Kelly Soderlund, ADA News staff

Springfield, Ill.—Illinois is the latest state to issue regulations on how health care providers, including dentists, can participate in social couponing websites without violating unethical fee-splitting laws.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations on April 10 issued a statement that says as long as health care providers follow certain rules, advertising their services using vouchers does not constitute unethical fee-splitting. Under the traditional business models for entities like Groupon and Living Social, the social couponing companies generally keep a percentage of the revenue from patients, remitting the remainder to the dentist, which could be deemed illegal fee-splitting under state law.

Illinois health care providers can advertise their services through a social coupon if they ensure that the negotiated fee between the voucher advertising company and themselves represents a reasonable compensation for the cost of advertising. They also must clearly and conspicuously incorporate the following terms and conditions in all ads:

Product Review – E4D Solo Scanner ……………………………………………………………………………..

E4D Solo Digital Impression Scanner!

D4D Technologies recently launched a trio of new products and services with the debut of the E4D Solo digital impression system and the updated DentaLogic 4.5 software featuring the E4D Sky network.

The new offerings provide an open CAD/CAM solution and allow dental practices to capture digital impressions and send them to a range of internal and external service providers for fabrication of dental restorations, according to a pair of press releases.

The new software allows practices to exchange digital case data via the E4D Sky communications network, expanding the treatment options they can offer patients via the E4D CAD/CAM system. E4D Sky is supported by Henry Schein’s DDX (Digital Dental Exchange).

The service allows practices to send cases to E4D Digital Services, E4D Certified Laboratories or other third party providers capable of accepting .stl files. This provides dental practices with E4D systems with access to new restoration types, new materials and other services, according to the press release

The newly available E4D Solo is a scan only digital impression system that connects via E4D Sky to allow practices to send scanned patient data for the design and fabrication of restorations by external dental labs.

E4D Solo can be added to a practice as an open digital impression system. Additionally, for practices currently using the E4D CAD/CAM system it can be added as a second digital impression unit capable of sharing scans with the existing design center and mill or sending the data for external design and fabrication.

E4D Solo is available in a cart configuration for intraoral digital impressions or in a desktop configuration for impression and model scanning.
