image001Tapping the Collective Energy!

Energy is a buzz word in today’s political climate and that’s because everything that moves requires some form it. Your dental practice is no different; it requires energy to make it move. That energy can come in many forms such as technology, new procedures or increased revenue. However, one of the most overlooked forms of energy is your team and very possibly one or two particular team member. You see, energy cannot be created or destroyed, just transferred or transformed and quite often it can become contagious.

A Dentist is usually conditioned to micro manage their business and that’s not a bad thing as long as it doesn’t suppress the energy that a talented team or individual team member can produce. All too often I have had team members talk to me about their ideas for energizing their work place and then the conversation turns to the “boss” that doesn’t want to listen.

The key to a successful organization is to tap the collective energy from your team. If you can ignite the stored up energy hidden within your team members, you can begin transferring it to the practice and transform what you have into what you want.

Take a good look at your team and find the star players, your champions, the exceptional individuals that have the ability to energize others. In most cases, those people don’t know the power they have so as a team leader, it is your responsibility to teach them how to utilize their talents to advance your practice and their careers.

I am sure you have attended a countless number of seminars on practice management. They all talk about the patient, re-care, treatment planning, O.S.H.A., emergency management and insurance. But, how many focus on engaging your team? Team focus is a universal concept that transcends all businesses and industries and it has proven success.

While being trained in dental school you concentrated on clinical procedures and had little if any instruction on business management. There is no shame in “not knowing”, however, there is a price to pay for not exploring and considering the team approach.

 Innovative ideas create a ripple effect—one great idea can guide innovation in a completely different industry, changing the future of that industry forever.
Consider smart phones. Touch screen technology evolved from a great idea to lead the development of smart phones into an entirely new era. Now, every time you touch an iPhone screen, you complete a circuit, and a small jolt of electricity shoots through your skin resulting in curser movement. Today it seems old-hat, and most people don’t think twice about it when they tap, swipe, swish, or drag.
Disney Senior Research Scientist, Ivan Poupyrev saw an opportunity with this technology and had a theory: What if he sent a broad spectrum of AC current through everyday objects? Would those objects be able to sense touch? The answer was yes, and he and his team developed Touché, a sensor system that takes “touch-technology” to a whole new level. Imagine the ripple effect that will come from this new idea!

As a dentist, you need to engage your staff and listen, because the world is changing faster & faster every day. Be innovated and let them be creative!

The ADA’s “New Dentist Conference”!
