The reason we do what we do, is so that we can to do what we want to do, when we want to do it!

It’s a tongue twister, but working as a team and making informed decisions, will get us there.

The Root of It Commentary………………………………………………..

image001  Are Dogs are Smarter than Cats?

Are dogs smarter than cats? The answer to that question is as combative as politics. Over the last 2 years we lost 2 of our dogs and now we’re left with just our Carrion Terrier, Roxy. That is until about 2 months ago.

At the end of June my baby girl graduated high School. The night of her graduation, she and a friend were walking back to the car and they found a 6 week old kitten tangle in some vines. Well, guess who came for diner? Now I have a dog and a cat. They get along great and play all the time but I have notice some remarkable differences. Although the kitten is now only about 15 weeks old, I have formed my own opinion about who is smarter.

Next time you are out with friends, ask the group the question. Not only will you get conflicting answers, but you will start a debate that could last for hours. The difference with this debate is that at the end, and there may never be an end, everyone walks away friends. These debates actually brings people closer because you can relate to the others passion. In these debates there are no losers because everyone likes animals, everyone is headed in the same direction. After all, who doesn’t love to hold a kitten or a puppy?

You just experienced a simple method of communication that can create team harmony, enhance the patient experience, and improve overall operational productivity at measurable levels.

Operational productivity has everything in your business under its umbrella. If you can create a program that is fun, you will be amazed at how it can affect your clinical, administrative, treatment plan acceptance, and re-care programs.

As an example, do you have anything going for the Super Bowl? I don’t mean tickets or parties; I mean getting involved with your patients and your TEAM. Team harmony, when implemented correctly and consistently will elevate your practice in ways you can’t imagine. The best part is that it doesn’t cost anything.

Grassroots News……………………………………………………………..

A Treatment Planning Workshop with Dr. Paul Homoly!

This past Tuesday evening the Grassroots Study Clubs of New Jersey launched the new Metro Group for Bergen, Hudson and Rockland Counties at the Vizstara Professional Educational Center. After a welcoming statement by the club President, Dr. Adam Kimowitz, there was a brief overview of the new Federal Sunshine Act that went into effect on August 1st. An overview of new regulations and requirements will be part of every meeting. Unlike most other study clubs, the Grassroots focus is on the entire world of dentistry that includes clinical and operational aspects. The evening was then turned over to Dr. Nicolas Elian for a presentation on implant protocol.

The Denville Group, that connects Morris, Essex and Passaic Counties, will hold its next meeting on Thursday evening September 26th at the Heritage Grill in Denville, NJ. There will be another review of the Sunshine Act and then there will be a presentation on facial fillers and advanced cosmetics in dentistry. This presentation does not focus on where dentistry is today, but where it is going and where it will be tomorrow.

The Club is holding their annual event on Wednesday October 9th at the Venetian in Garfield, NJ. This year’s full day program features Dr. Paul Homoly in a Treatment Planning Workshop. To register, log onto www.grassrootsstudyclub.com.

For more information on program dates or topics, or to register for any meetings or events, contact the club administrator Linda Barba @ 201-201-446-4265

Product Review – Digital Impressions…………………………………

Clinical Impressions of Digital Impression:

by Gary M. Radz, DDS

The age of digital dentistry has arrived in full force and is changing the way we all provide dental care. Digital radiographs are becoming the norm. CAD/CAM-created restorations are proving to meet and even exceed expectations. We use CAT scan technology to identify implant placement with accuracy never before thought possible.

Many of us communicate with our laboratory technicians and colleagues on a regular basis via e-mail and/or text messaging. We have automated patient reminder systems to let our patients know when their next appointment is, or to just wish them a happy birthday. We have Web site and search optimization companies to create online presences for our practices. We do our business banking online, and even help our patients get financing online. In short, digital technology has a tremendous impact on all aspects of how we practice dentistry.

In our office, we have incorporated all of the above-mentioned technologies to enhance our practice, improve our efficiency and quality as we build our practice, and provide our patients with better service.

Seeing all the positive effects that digital dentistry has had on our practices, it’s time for all dentists to begin to take a serious look at the “next big thing” in the digital world of dentistry — digital impression systems.

Ready to See What Financial Security Should Be?

image001

Recently I interviewed my friend Dr. Don Lewis at the Business of Dentistry conference and he shared some exciting information about his application that integrates with Dentrix G5.  It is amazing!  I believe it can help your practice.  Today, Dr. Don Lewis shares some questions and answers that will give you some insight into this product.

Donald P. Lewis, Jr., DDS, CFE is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AAOMS) and is currently in private practice as a leading oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Cleveland, Ohio.

Q.  What have you learned from developing Practice SafeGuard?

A.   I suffered a major financial loss from embezzlement in the 90s. It was personally devastating and there was a huge gap in the resources I had to fight my case. I became a CFE and began lecturing to thousands of dentists who had the same fears and nowhere to go. Earlier this year I lectured in a room of 200+ dentists and polled the audience – literally 72% of them thought they were victims of fraud. With my team, I’ve finally been able to develop an amazing solution. We’ve found scary amounts of potential loss, in the MILLIONS, in our few Early Adopter practices. This is unacceptable in any business. The most fascinating thing we’ve learned is, doctors can lose as much or more to entry errors as fraud. We know mistakes are not crime, and we don’t want to scare people with our message, but the losses are real, and they are preventable. With Practice Safe Guard, my case would have been open and shut. We’re so excited to see what Practice Safe Guard can do for every doctor battling unacceptable losses.

The Magic of Management…………………………………………………

The Consequences of Inadequate Training!

Posted on September 12, 2013 by Bruce Jones, Programming Director, Disney Institute

Zig Ziglar sent an important message when he said, “The only thing worse than training your employees and losing them, is not training your employees and keeping them.”

An Allied Workforce Mobility study found that, within a year, employers lose nearly one-quarter of new hires while another one-third do not satisfy their productivity targets. The case for training as a means of employee retention is as strong as ever.

The problem? Companies select and hire people, but then underinvest in the training that helps develop the organization’s desired behaviors. When people don’t understand how to do their jobs they become frustrated, and since emotional engagement is the strongest driver of discretionary effort, frustrated employees are much less likely to reach their optimum level of productivity.

The impact can be felt in two major ways:

Internal: Frustration can have a detrimental impact on the organization as a whole — motivation and effort decrease, enabling a slow decay of your organization’s culture.
External: The story goes that for every one person that hears about a good experience, 10 hear about a negative one — word travels quickly. Frustrated employees are more likely to voice their grievances, especially outside of the workplace. These people can poison your organization, and your brand.

ACA requires marketplace notice to dental employees!

 image005    September 11, 2013

For constituent dental societies that have not already acted, it is important to understand that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) amends the Fair Labor Standards Act by creating a requirement that employers provide a notice to employees informing them of the existence of the newly formed ACA marketplaces along with information on how to contact the marketplace to request assistance in purchasing coverage if employees choose to do so.

Specifically, by October 1 all employers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (which includes dental offices with employees) will have to furnish each employee with a notice that informs the employee that there are new health insurance marketplace coverage options available. Department of Labor notices designed for this purpose are available for printing. One notice is for employers who offer a health plan to some or all employees and the other is for employers who do not.

The requirement has no effect on whether an employer offers health care coverage.
