The reason we do what we do, is so that we can to do what we want to do, when we want to do it!

It’s a tongue twister, but working as a team and making informed decisions, will get us there.

image001  Shades of Grey Can Rock Your Patient’s World!

What color patient bibs and tray covers do you use? What color are the walls and ceiling in your operatory? What color is your patient chair and operator stools? Most of my clients use blue or lavender because they are trendy colors and ad softness to the immediate environment.  However, do you understand the effects of ambient light?

Ambient light is affected by reflection off colored surfaces. About 15 years ago The Belmont Corp introduced the first color correct light for the dental industry. The Clesta Light was amazing when I first saw it. I was handed a brown colored plate and asked to take it outside, when I did the natural sunlight changed it to purple. Back inside the showroom the plate turned back to brown until held directly under the Clesta Light when again it looked purple. Today, all quality dental overhead lights are daylight correct, BUT, you still have reflection off colored surfaces that change the light wave pattern.

If you are using blue patient bibs, the ambient reflection will affect your shade matching ability. There will be a slight blue tint in the lighting and that even a shade matching light will detect. That may cause an off color reaction when the patient moves into different light settings throughout their daily routines.

So, what is the solution? A lifetime in dentistry has taught me to look back at some old time remedies, shades of grey! Grey (silver grey as they are referred to) patient bibs, tray covers, cups, neutral colors like beige (not brown) will not affect the daylight performance of that expensive overhead light you bought. Neutral colors will also reduce your eye strain and help relieve day end fatigue. Remember, shades of grey can be a simple change that can enhance your restorative procedures.

Product Review – Pola Office +……………………………………

Said to be the world’s fastest in-office tooth whitening system, Pola Office+ by SDI reportedly requires less than 30 minutes of treatment time.

Since it doesn’t require light activation, the system can be used with or without a bleaching light as any heat emitting curing light can be used.  Plus, the neutral pH bleaching and built-in desensitizer of Pola Office+ is said to offer maximum comfort during and after treatment, resulting in lower sensitivity and less patient discomfort.

Equipped with a dual barrel syringe system capable of reaching tight spots, the whitener doesn’t require mixing trays as it mixes as it’s applied to guarantee a blend of activated gel.

No bleaching light required

Pola Office+ can be used with or without a bleaching light, as it does not require activation. While a light is not necessary, you certainly can use a bleaching light or a standard heat emitting curing light to accelerate the bleaching process and impress your patients.

Maximum comfort

The neutral pH of Pola Office+ ensures maximum comfort during and after treatment. The shorter treatment time results in less patient discomfort and lower sensitivity.

Built-in desensitizer

No separate desensitizer is required. Pola Office+ has unique built-in desensitizing properties that inhibit post-operative sensitivity. Potassium nitrate, the key pain-reducing ingredient, penetrates the nerve endings by blocking transmission of sensitive nerve impulses to provide a calming effect.
Simple delivery

No mixing is required. The dual barrel syringe system mixes as you apply the gel directly to the tooth. This ensures a consistent blend of freshly activated gel. The freshly activated gel maximizes the whitening effect. The fine applicator tip allows easy application, especially in tight spots.
Just one thin layer

A thin layer of gel is all that is required. Use the tip to spread the gel ensuring all tooth surfaces are covered. The sticky gel formula adheres firmly to tooth surfaces maximising the bleaching effect.

Ad-Photo-7486-1   What is CIMT?

A new game-changing study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association showed that when we address clinical views of gum disease plus bacteria and microbial approach, we can slow down and the progression of blockage in the carotid artery. This is big news for both the medical and dental communities, so let’s break it down:

First of all, what is CIMT?

Source: http://tinyurl.com/lq6zkds

CIMT stands for Carotid Intima‐Media Thickness, or the thickness of the inner layers of the arterial wall. The thickness of the carotid artery is important because thickening of the carotid artery is almost 100% associated with thickening of the arteries around the heart. This means we can easily look at your neck with an ultrasound and get a pretty accurate glimpse of your heart health. To put it simply, you’re on the fast track to a heart attack if you have an elevated CIMT.

With that in mind, do you see the significance of this latest study? If addressing periodontal disease slows the progression of thickening of the carotid artery, and the carotid artery almost always mirrors the thickness of the arteries around the heart, research is yet again showing that oral care is good for the heart!

The Magic of Management………………………………………….

To Attract Top Talent, Be Intentional!

December 3, 2013 by Bruce Jones, Programming Director, Disney Institute

In a survey of over 2,000 job seekers conducted by Monster, three quarters said that they regularly see jargon or acronyms in job postings, and more than half (57%) say that this puts them off from applying for a job.

There are a number of things that must be done right in the beginning of the hiring process because they cannot be repaired later on. One of the biggest mistakes organizations make is a far too casual approach to the recruiting process. For example, job descriptions have so many clichés and jargon words (bottleneck, laser-focused, granularization, etc.) that it becomes difficult for applicants to understand the scope of the work they will be asked to perform. Ultimately, these organizations risk turning away the applicant and the opportunity to recruit top talent.

At Disney, we believe that each applicant comes to us with preexisting skills and behaviors — some that match our requirements and some that do not. These skills and behaviors will vary based on the values of every organization; however, there are certain things that can be done to increase the likelihood of hiring people with a propensity to be great.

image005  EHRs provide long-term savings, convenience!

December 3, 2013 ADA News staff

As technology advances and government regulations continue to encourage, or even push, the use of electronic health records, electronic forms are becoming standard in dental and medical practices.

While there can be high up-front costs for incorporating an electronic health records system, the investment can provide tremendous savings over the long run, said Brett Lindstrom, director of The Dental Record, the only ADA Business Resources-endorsed EHR provider.

“An office using paper records will pay approximately $4.50 per complete chart. With 20 new patients each month, that’s over $1,000 annually on new patient charts alone, and that doesn’t include the cost of forms for returning patients,” he said. For offices that scan paperwork, treating 2,500 patients annually would result in spending $2,000 every year just for the staff time of scanning forms
