The reason we do what we do, is so that we can to do what we want to do, when we want to do it!
It’s a tongue twister, but working as a team and making informed decisions, will get us there.
“The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem.”

The Root of It Commentary…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
I am a firm believer in the 80/20 rule. I believe that 80% of small business owners (and most dentists are small business owners) are the biggest liability in growing their organizations. As I grow older I can understand the mistakes I made, and what I learned from them. Think about my quote of the week “The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem.”
The one thing that all businesses have in common is that they ALL buy and sell goods and services. A dental office is being paid for providing goods & services. There for standard business principles and economics, with checks and balances, need to be implemented and maintained. You can’t reduce the cost of doing business and you can’t prevent it from rising, however, you can control it.
To start, you need to identify your costs (I like to think of costs as investments) and separate the revenue expended on each (use QuickBooks). Then you need to determine if those “investments” are fixed or variable. Fixed costs usually require the largest part of your out-bound cash flow, but unfortunately most owners tackle the variable side aggressively because it is easier to relate to, they’re in front of you everyday. You need to understand that the “variable” side will always remain in the same percentile as compared to your production while your fixed costs will rise regardless of production.
Case in point: If your production drops by 10%, your variable costs (i.e. clinical & office supplies, lab fees, etc.) drop by a similar amount. The percentile of variable costs vs gross production hasn’t changed in 50 years. However, your fixed costs (i.e. rent, salaries, insurance, annual contracts, etc.) will not change regardless of lost production.
All of these costs together define your business overhead and you CANNOT reduce overhead, you can only control it, but, by increasing your production you can reduce the footprint your overhead has on your in-bound revenue.
Controlling your variables costs will save you dimes, controlling your fixed cost will save you big dollars! However, increasing production will get you the Houses, Cars & Boats.
The problem is not the problem. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns.

In-Sight from the Mouse! Become a Dream Employer for the Next Generation with Storytelling!
by Bruce Jones, Programming Director, Disney Institute
Recently, we have posted about the importance of developing the next generation of leaders and one of the most critical roles that all leaders play: to find and develop other leaders – in essence, to multiply yourself.
But, of course, if you want to develop your next generation of leaders, you must first attract them to your business. But, how? Lets start with an understanding of what the Millennial generation is looking for in today’s organizations using The Walt Disney Company as an illustration.
Recently, Forbes published a story citing The Walt Disney Company as the “#1 Dream Employer” for Liberal Arts Students. The story is based on research conducted by Universum, which surveyed more than 11,000 current undergrad students. They were asked to identify from a pool of 230 companies, the employer for which they most wanted to work.
The Universum survey cited that the “four most attractive characteristics” of a potential employer for these students was:
- Respect for employees
- Creative work environment
- Job security
- Ethical standards

This Week Dentistry From the ADA: ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Comments sought on operative dentistry proposal!
The Council on Dental Education and Licensure is seeking comments, due Oct. 20, for a request by the Academy of Operative Dentistry to recognize operative dentistry as an interest area in general dentistry.
CDEL invites written comments from individuals and organizations on AOD’s application. Comments must relate directly to the Criteria for Recognition of Interest Areas in General Dentistry, which the ADA House of Delegates adopted in 2010. In addition to written comments, CDEL will conduct an open hearing at 11 a.m. Oct. 11 at ADA 2014 — America’s Dental Meeting in San Antonio.
CDEL will consider AOD’s application, the recommendation of the Recognition of Specialties and Interest Areas in General Dentistry Committee and all comments received at its April 30-May 1, 2015, meeting. The council will forward its recommendation to the 2015 ADA House of Delegates.
If approved, the Commission on Dental Accreditation is likely to consider a request from AOD to develop educational requirements and establish an accreditation program for advanced educational programs in operative dentistry.
Submit comments to CDEL Director Karen Hart via email at hartk@ada.org; via mail to the Council on Dental Education and Licensure, American Dental Association, 211 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago, IL 60611; or fax to 1-312-440-2915. All comments received will be posted on ADA.org.
