When Disaster Strikes, It Could be a Head Punch!
There is an old saying “S- – t Happens”. Most of the time it’s only little Puppy Poop, but sometimes it can be real bad! How prepared are you?
When you think of disasters you think of storms, fires, network security, etc. and you have insurance to cover those possibilities, and help manage the “disaster recovery”. But what about a long term plan? OK, now I have to get graphic: A 49 year old dentist with a $600k/year practice, 3 kids, and is bringing home $250k/year is driving home and gets in a car accident. It’s a bad one and the doc ends up in the hospital. Now you would think that recovery and rehab may take 30 days and the doc has friends to cover emergencies, but what is the doc does not recover? Sure there is plenty of life insurance to help take care of the family, but what about the dental practice and all of its liabilities. What about the equity accumulated over the last 15-20 years? The value of the practice will drop 30% within the 1st week!
What is the practice worth? How are active treatment plans handled? How are patients informed? Who address account receivables & payables? How is the equity converted to cash? Will the surviving life partner or children have clear enough heads to manage this very difficult transition?
In this case example, the doc died instantly. The spouse was well taken care of finically but it took 3 months to sell the $1.4M practice with a final price tag of $450k and the seller took responsibility for the outstanding receivables. Not having a plan cost over $500,000.00 (1Half a Million $) in lost “real” dollars.
Transition is the key word here. A plan for your families transition into a life without you needs to be very high on your priority list TODAY! You accountant, lawyer, insurance agent and practice management consultant can help but they can’t do it, there is too much involved. You need to lead this plan and develop a strategy for implementation. It sounds a lot harder than it is, in most cases all the information is available but is needs to be coordinated with a central authority to put the plan into action the moment the trigger is pulled. A general manager to implement all phases and make sure that all checks & balances are open and transparent.

In-Sight from the Mouse! Are You Listening Intentionally?

At Disney Institute, we believe that showing genuine care for employees is the best way to enhance workplace culture and drive sustained employee engagement. In demonstrating genuine care, there is one factor we have observed that distinguishes a good organization from a great organization: leaders who intentionally listen.
In our Disney Institute training work, we teach individuals and organizations the essential concept of intentional listening. As an important signal of genuine care, intentional listening is an important leadership tool that builds relationships and earns employee trust.
So, how can you get started and improve your listening skills? Interestingly, author Tony Robbins writes about the importance of recognizing the way employees work. “If you want to get the most out of your employees, or your children, or those you supervise, figure out their work strategies,” Robbins says.
According to Robbins, their work strategy (the way an employee functions at work) generally falls into one of three categories:
- Independent Strategy: Those who often find it difficult to work closely with others. These employees crave autonomy and work best with minimal supervision.
- Cooperative Strategy: Employees who embrace a cooperative strategy work best in groups where responsibility is shared. They may champion a task individually, but thrive when given the opportunity to collaborate with their team.
- Proximity Strategy: A hybrid of the previous two strategies, employees who exhibit a proximity strategy enjoy the opportunity to work as a part of a team but also require time to work individually.

Sunshine Act: Transfer of value reports to go public Sept. 30
Review-dispute process extended through Sept. 10

Washington — Dentists can register to review and dispute through Sept. 10 any Sunshine Act reports that a company has submitted under the dentist’s name. Earlier review-dispute deadlines were extended through Sept. 10. Companies then have an additional 15 days to attempt to resolve disputes and re-report any data that is changed.
However, the government is still planning to post the information on a searchable public Open Payments website beginning Sept. 30 as scheduled.
The Sunshine Act requires certain companies that provide payments, gifts, food, education and other “transfers of value” to dentists to report information to the government about each dentist and what was provided and to report ownership and investment interests held by dentists and their immediate family members. Physicians, including dentists, and teaching hospitals can register in the Open Payments system to review and dispute data submitted by applicable manufacturers and applicable group purchasing organizations during the first phase of a review, dispute and correction process that ended Aug. 27 before the several deadline extensions. After Sept. 10, industry “will analyze these disputes and work with physicians and teaching hospitals to come to agreement on any necessary corrections,” said the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
