“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” … George Bernard Shaw

image001  For the last several years I have been asking my clients to get involved with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and then move into total systemic health. Some have and stopped and some do it part time. Very few make it part of their regular exam. I can’t see how anyone couldn’t see the value of a total health program. It cost nothing and the benefits are multifold.

Some of the most successful dental practices I work with have added the total health concept to their hygiene protocol. The national health organizations predict that 18 to 20 million Americans have Obstructive Sleep Apnea and 80% don’t know it. That translates to 5% of your current patient base. New tech-nology has enhanced diagnostics and will continue to do so. The role of the dental community is rapidly changing and dentists (oral health specialists) will become targets for “failure to diagnose”.

OSA is just one systemic condition that can be identified during an oral exam. Salivary testing is finding biomarkers for all types of systemic concerns. The links below will give you a better understanding how far the research has progressed and how fast the changes are happening.

Think about all the health conditions that effect your patient base. From child & spousal abuse to hypertension to cancer. The dental community has been put on the front line. In the very near future (2016) interdisciplinary seminars and round tables will begin forming. I suggest you get involved and embrace to new world of medicine.

The New Buzz Word … Interdisciplinary Medicine

Please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss the advantages and implementation of a 1st class proactive systemic health program.
